Job Hunting Trip - Worth It?
« on: January 06, 2005, 09:17:25 PM »
First, the DISCLAIMER---I am a dual US/UK citizen and will be entering the UK with my British passport.  I know that a US citizen is not permitted to seek employment with just a visitor stamp in their passport and do not recommend that anyone do so.

Whew!  Ok, with that out of the way....

I am having a difficult time finding a job in Scotland from the US.  Although I have worked in the same field for 15 years now, I don't really have any specialized skills that would make an employer in Scotland choose me over someone who lives just down the street and wouldn't need to move across the ocean to accept a job offer!  With that in mind, I am considering a 'job hunting trip' for 10 days-2 weeks this spring.  Does anyone think this would be at all useful?  Or would I be better off saving the airfare and just printing up 9 million copies of my CV to send out instead?  (I've got a place to stay, so my only real expense would be the airfare.)  Any thoughts?
When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

I think it is easier to come and look for a job in person instead of doing a search from the other side of the pond.  If you haven't already done so, you should mention in cover letters that you plan on being in Scotland for a couple of weeks and that you are a dual citizen.  You may get some responses from employers and agencies.

Dont know if there is any point in mentioning being 'dual'.... She's British, and that's all they need to know!
I'll be thinking of you tomorrow, closet hippie, when i am sat waiting for my car at the Subaru garage in Penicuik.  ;)

Closet, try some local colleges and universities as well.  They might be more flexible with regards to hiring a British person who is not yet in the UK.  In the Edinburgh-area alone, there are:

Edinburgh University (www.ed.ac.uk)
Napier University
Heriot-Watt University
Queen Margaret's College (which is moving to University status this year)

and colleges:

Telford College
Jewel & Esk Valley
Stevenson

On a cover letter, I think I'd just explain that I'm a UK national living in the States and wishing to come back.

I'm getting ready to send off two online apps to the University of Edinburgh now!  I've been on Heriot-Watt's website, but I'll be sure and check out the rest of them you recommended.  Thanks!

They have some pretty good vacancies for some specialised fields.  They're great employers and very flexible.  The others can all be found online as well.  Edin U is centrally located, but the others are out and about, with campuses spread all over town and in the outskirts.
