Starting a contractor job, what do I need to know?
« on: May 27, 2021, 11:59:56 AM »
Hello! I currently hold a regular job where they take taxes from my paycheck in the UK. As a side job, I am going to do some independent contracting work where no taxes are taken out. This may put me in a higher tax bracket as well.  I did my taxes last year with just a regular job and it was pretty straightforward. All I did was file through H and R block expat and it was very easy. However with no taxes being taken out here in the UK and in the US how should I approach reporting my taxes to both the US and UK? I stink at doing any filing myself so who would I contact to make sure they are correct in the UK and secondly would I just file the same next year for the US with H and R block but report my contracting work?  Thank you for any help! Trying to get a huge jump ahead for next year before it creeps up on me!

I would just do what you are used to doing with your US taxes but include the contract work.

For HMRC it sounds like you may have to do a self assessment which is pretty easy to do yourself online through the HMRC portal.  I helped by wife's sister do her returns a couple of years back when she had unusual income that was not taxed through PAYE.

However, I would contact HMRC first and explain the situation as there may be an easier way.
