Obviously you're not obliged to become a UK citizen. If your current situation suits you, that's great. It's just that we've seen so many people here on the forum who have so much regret at not taking it when they could have, as their circumstances later changed in a way they did not anticipate.
Admittedly, they were not necessarily at the same life stage so maybe not fair to compare. But as long as you are fully aware of the pros and cons, that's the main thing.  :)

I’m going to tell a story from 2019 when my wife and I took a cruise from Florida to California through the Panama Canal. This sort of story would never happen in the UK of course (cough, cough,Windrush).  On board was a specialist coffee shop that my wife and I used to enjoy going to early in the morning. Within a couple of days we had a long chat with a guy who said he was traveling with his mother because his wife of 40 years couldn’t come and she didn’t want to waste the money by canceling so told him to his mother. She had been a green card holder for 50 years and when she came came to renew it this time it was rejected. Big shock, but there is an appeals process so she appealed the decision and lost the appeal. No idea why because you only ever get a one line rejection letter that makes no sense, and I can relate to that because it took 3 attempts, 6 months between each application to get my GC and this was using my company’s lawyers.  It’s impossible even for the lawyers to speak to the INS,  and for my 3rd and successful attempt the application was made through Lincoln Nebraska instead of New Orleans where I was living.

This guy’s wife is now an illegal alien just waiting on the deportation notice and they have hired a specialist lawyer who assures her that once the deportation order comes through she will have a right to appear before a judge and that is good because he will then be able to argue her case in court. Meanwhile, don’t leave the country.

A couple of days later my wife tells me a story from the onboard knitting circle she attends. One of the ladies was meant to be traveling with a friend who had to cancel because her GC renewal was rejected, she has appealed the decision but meanwhile her GC has expired. This is a widow who has had a GC for decades.

With citizenship, UK or US, just about the only reason you can lose it  and be deported is for treason.

I will now bow out of this discussion  :)

Fred, my 2p for why you should get citizenship.

You already did this song and dance years ago.  Had you received U.K. citizenship back then, you would not have had to do all this malarkey the last 5 years.

If you get citizenship, you simply never have to think about this sh*t again.

But if you are permanently here, there’s no need. Just remember if it stops being permanent….  You are back at the starting line.

Oh, I get it. I've thought about getting citizenship quite a few times.....maybe I'll even do it.

There was no reason to get UK citizenship before, same reason I didn't get German or Japanese citizenship. I was working for the US Govt while living here and other countries and we went back to the US for 4 years after we retired. With hind site...........we shouldn't have gone back to the US and I should have gone through the visa/citizenship thing 10 years ago.

Another way of looking at it I guess......In another 3.5 years I either have to do my visa/brp crap again or just do the citizenship slog.

With citizenship, UK or US, just about the only reason you can lose it  and be deported is for treason.

An individual can be deprived of their British citizenship if it is later found that in an application they used -
-fraud
-false representation
-concealment of a material fact .

The Secretary of State may also deprive an individual of citizenship where they are satisfied that deprivation is conducive to the public good. That also covers national security, what the UK deems to be serious crimes, war crimes and unacceptable behaviours.

There is no time limit for deprivation of British citizenship. Under the Immigratiom Act 1971, they don't get their settlement back (ILR, Settled Status) when deprived of their British citizenship

The Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002,  removed the protection of not  losing citizenship for those who are born British. It's now the same for those who are born British and those who naturalised (adult)/registered (child) as British, as long as they are not made stateless.

With the Immigration Act 2014, British citizenship can now be removed if the Secreatry of State only thinks they have a claim to another citizenship even if they don't hold/still hold that citizenship. Which means the UK meets the requirement of not making somebody stateless when they are deprived of their British citizenship.

So.....a few bad rounds of golf (and swearing) is probably not enough to get me thrown out of the country.

Those rules above are to lose citizenship, to lose your ILR then false representation of your handicap might do it.

Being deported would lose your ILR.

EDIT It would reder your ILR invalid.

Can my indefinite leave to enter or remain be taken away?

If you are deported from the UK your indefinite leave will be invalidated.
Indefinite leave can also be taken away (revoked) if you:

are liable to deportation but cannot be removed for legal reasons, such as the UK’s obligations under the Refugee Convention or the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR)
    obtained leave by deception
were granted leave as a refugee and cease to be a refugee

Your indefinite leave will lapse if you stay outside the UK for 2 or more years (5 or more, if granted settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme) at a time.

I think the UK The UK Borders Act 2007 brought in automatic deportation if a foreign national is convicted of a crime and their jail sentence is for at least 12 months, even if not served? If you drive, you might want to think about getting British citizenship?

7.2 with England golf.  If you play competitions the computers know all........and it's complicated enough now for me not to even try to figure out why I play off 8 at Knaresborough and 9 at Ripon.

I think the UK The UK Borders Act 2007 brought in automatic deportation if a foreign national is convicted of a crime and their jail sentence is for at least 12 months, even if not served?

I should add that the EU would not allow the UK Labour government to use this new law to deport  foreign nationals who were in the UK under their EU regulations of Free Movement (EEA citizens and their non-EEA citizen family members). As the EU regulations ended in the UK on 1 January 2021, they are now subject to UK laws too.

There is always the chance the UK could reduce the 12 months to lose the petty crimanal foreign nationals in the UK, on the EU settlement scheme? Repeat offenders fail the good character requirement for British citizenship.
