My passport is up for renewal in March 2022, as I got it in March 2012. My FLR BRP has arrived and is safe and sound at my house, so I don't need my passport for any visa applications until 2023.
My question is, does anyone know how long it's taking for passports to be renewed? I looked on the US passport services at the US Embassy's website but it doesn't give a timeline or any sort of estimate in time. I also didn't see an address to mail it? It seemed to me like it is a mail-in service, nothing really online or in-person. Unless I missed something? The reason this even matters, is because I was hoping to go home for Christmas 2021, which is in 2 months. First, can I even travel in December 2021 if my passport will expire in March 2022? Like, is the 6months thing only for visas? This is my first and only passport so I've never had to worry about it being almost expired before.
If I can leave it as it is, go home for Christmas then apply in January or so, I'm just a little worried about timing. What if the wait time is, say, 5 months or something and my passport expires before my new one comes in. What are the rules around this? Or, am I completely overthinking and I can just go home for Christmas and apply for renewal when I come back? I'm just unsure if I should scrap my Christmas plans all together because of this passport expiry thing, or if I'm overthinking and it'll be fine. Can someone please clarify?
