Stimulus check could not be deposited
« on: December 08, 2021, 12:23:21 PM »
Hi all

I filed my 2020 taxes and used a newly created Wise account for payment. I've had a letter from the IRS today saying they tried to deposit into the account but couldn't. I don't have the letter in front of me as my husband phoned me from home to tell me the contents of the letter. I'm a little worried because it said something about auditing other returns?! And that it would take 8 weeks for them to try again, and if unsuccessful they will send a check.

Has this happened to anyone else and how did it go in the end?

I wish I'd never made that Wise account. :(

(Worried)

I don’t have a Wise Borderless account but I am guessing that it comes with a UK and a US style routing number and bank account. Have you double checked that the IRS have the correct details?  Does the account have a mobile check deposit feature? If it does then before closing the account I would wait until I received the check from the IRS and try depositing it that way.

You might want to check this out from the Wise website:

Maybe the deposit problem triggered a fraud concern, especially as the destination is a Wise account where the Know Your Customer requirements may be lower than that of a bricks and mortar bank.

Double check your Wise US account details, as advised above.

This is of interest to me as I have a Wise account and use it for my Fidelity IRA withdrawals and have never had a problem. I was hoping to use it for my 2021 IRS tax refund, and then close down my Wells Fargo account. Obviously your post has raised some concern. Were you using the American bank details?
Does anyone have any experience of using Wise  for IRS deposits. I bet they’ll accept payment from Wise without any question.

My three daughters each have a Wise account - all 3 successfully received their stimulus payments into their accounts - no problems.

I'm also arranging to receive my SS this way.
