How to file taxes?
« on: February 02, 2022, 08:43:03 AM »
Hi! My husband moved to the U.K. in April last year, he knew how to regularly file the US taxes over there on TurboTax etc but now he’s over here, how does he do this? should we find a company that would help with ? Just wondering what everyone else did, we aren’t the best at this kind of thing haha! Just unsure on the forms etc   ??? :-[

I still use TurboTax but if your husband no longer has a US credit card then he may have trouble buying or paying for it.

Others here report using TaxAct.

I've just given up on trying to use TurboTax etc. Did it by hand last year.....depending on your situation it isn't that hard (at least for me, retired). I no longer have a US credit card and the hassle of trying to find someone I know who will let me use their phone number etc...is just annoying as hell.

Hi both,

Should my husband file an extension as he moved here April 26 2021, so hasn't been out of the USA a year. He started working for the NHS in June of last year, would that be best to do the extension? I'm a bit confused with all the things i'm reading online!

My son filed an extension under similar circumstances. He wanted to exclude his UK salary with FEIE the first year he moved back but you have to be outside the USA for about a year(?) so filed an extension.

My husband is 3 days off the year mark it turns out! so he should be able to file in a couple days. He has put his US income on the W2 and then he will declare his UK income on the form 2555 is that right? So just whatever the top line on the payslips were? He is enrolled in a pension too, would that have to be declared on there too in any other section or basically if he adds up the top line is that ok?

We are sooo confused with it all  :-[

My son includes the employer contributions to his pension plan  as part of the gross salary.

The actual value of his DC pension he reports on his FBAR.

Good to know as I have failed multiple times in the past (UK card AND UK address?).  I still have a US Amex card with a US address that I use to buy Turbotax so haven't tried in recent years to use my UK card.

Someone on the site, F4mandolin, is still unable to use a UK credit card.

I've given up trying....still putting off finishing the taxes at it is. It's not that hard to do them by hand....I'm just lazy.
