ON FLR and US Passport Renewal
« on: February 19, 2023, 04:01:39 PM »
My wife is currently on FLR and is about to renew her US passport via the US embassy here in London.
Once she has her new US passport is there anything she needs to do with the Home Office and current FLR BRP?

Thanks!

P.S will be applying for ILR shortly after but priority is that she needs to renew her US passport before.

I think the answer is that she only needs to take further action if she is changing her name/ information. I'm an American on an ILR now and my passport was renewed when I was was on my FLR-M visa. But I renewed it in the US (in 2019) - it was shockingly easy - all done in a few hours! I didn't change my name because of the hassle of it affecting my visa so I am still formally using my maiden name.

Good luck! :)

Once the passport has been renewed, you will need to update her BRP details with the new passport number by filling out a Change of Circumstances form.

See here for how to do it:

Hi ksdand,

Let me provide some context.
I can’t see anywhere on the site that you need to inform the HO of when you renew your passport.

She is currently on her final FLR which expires end of April, her passport is also due to expire in the summer and is less than 6 months away so her travel is sometimes impacted Aa her passport has less than 6 months validity.

1. When she renews her US passport, does she still need to update her current BRP which is due to expire in April?
2. My assumption was that since she is applying for her ILR anyway (on her new passport) she will be issued with a new BRP anyway.
3. Or is it just a formality thay anytime a passport os renewed, whether she is on ILR or FLR she will need to do a change of circs?

Sorry very confused!

Hi ksdand,

I can’t see anywhere on the site that you need to inform the HO of when you renew your passport.

See the link I posted above, which links to the MCC change of circumstances form (https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/768465/coc-_migrant_-12-18.pdf)

The form says:

I would do it anyway, so that you can show you have updated the details if they ask.

It’s really simple, you just fill in the MCC form and send it back. That’s it. There’s no new BRP issued, it’s just a bit of admin to make sure you have all your ducks in a row.

Then you apply for ILR as normal in a couple of months.

It’s just a formality - you do the same thing every time you move house during the BRP validity.

Thanks ksand24

When choosing this option in the form and if she is on FLR when her new passport arrives, is it the FAMILY or SETTLEMENT visa ?

Most people go for FAMILY.
