Very quick tax return question.
« on: May 19, 2023, 02:49:37 PM »
So Im a Uk wage slave, with no income apart from my UK wages, and no ties whatsover to the US.

Recently i learned the piano, and its pushed out my memory of how to does these damnable tax returns.

Is this right

1040, 1a,     Put UK earnings for calender year 2022   ( a lot less than 112k, alas)

Work my way through 2555 and 1040 schedule 1,  and end up with being able to put the full -112k in  1040 line 10

Hence Line 15, taxable income, 0    trebles all round, god bless america

Yep, that sounds right to me except this year line 1 is broken into many subcategories so the UK wages go on line 1h, at least that is what TurboTax did for my son’s return. (He is in exactly the same position as you).

It is assumed from the question that you do not belong to an employer sponsored UK pension plan, because no employer pension contributions are mentioned. Schedule B, Part III would also be required.

where to put interest earned on a savings account?

1. My son adds the employer contributions to the gross salary, and excludes it all on form 2555

2. Put interest from savings accounts on a 1099-INT that you make up for your UK bank or put it  straight  onto Schedule B Part I and you should also check the boxes in Part III on whether you have foreign bank accounts, foreign trusts or not.

Employer pension contributions do not qualify for the foreign earned income exclusion. Interest is reported on Schedule B, Form 1116 and Form 8938. Non-US accounts - including most UK pension plans are reported on Form 8938 and an FBAR.

Employer pension contributions do not qualify for the foreign earned income exclusion. It may help to refer back to the law on this matter. This says:
"I.R.C. § 911(b)(1)(B) Certain Amounts Not Included In Foreign Earned Income — The foreign earned income for an individual shall not include amounts—...
I.R.C. § 911(b)(1)(B)(iii) — included in gross income by reason of section 402(b) (relating to taxability of beneficiary of nonexempt trust)"

Fair enough, so where should the OP report his employer pension and health contributions? “Other income” perhaps?
