Shingles Vaccine
« on: September 06, 2023, 03:23:12 AM »
So today I got my first of two Shringix jabs.  They said the side effects could be anything from as nasty as the first Covid jab I got (with "Covid Arm" and muscle pain all that) to almost imperceptible. Or fever and chills. Or I'd be in the loo hurling my toenails up.  Well that was a definite sort of answer they gave!

As of right now (and it's been about 12 hours), I look odd - my color is way off and I have dark circles under my eyes. I was on a Zoom call with the Daughter and she noted that.  I definitely feel "odd" - I don't know how to describe it other than the inside of my ears feels... well, they feel! Not something one normally feels, I don't think! And almost kind of a sinus thing going. I have a noticeable brain fog. I started to get a headache (they also said that could happen) so I took something pre-emptively for that.  I'm taking some more meds and crawling in bed after a nice cuppa. Tea cures all, after all!

Has anyone had the shot(s)? If so, how did your immune system react? And how long before you felt normal again?  Was the second vaccination the same results, worse, better?

I hope you feel better soon.

I had the then current shingles vaccine shot back in 2015 and it had no side effect. I don’t know anyone who has had the shingrx shots which are supposed to be better protecting than it’s predecessor.

Yeah, it's (Shingrex) apparently good for at least 10 years ( that's as long as they have data for).  It's a killed virus, rather than the weakened one they used to give in the one-shot protocol. The CDC is telling folks who need a shingles vaccine to get the new one even if they've already had the old one, and Medicare is paying for it. Which is good, because otherwise it would cost around $500 for the two-jab series as private pay!

So last night before I conked out I looked in the mirror and had huge bags under my eyes. (That seems to be happening a lot lately.) Went to sleep, woke up at like 5:00am with my arm hurting like heck. Bags were gone. Headache was gone. Brain fog is (I think) gone. Ears are fine. Sinuses are still a bit wonky. Was able to go over to the allotment to water the seeds and seedlings as it's going to be in the 90Fs here today and I didn't want them going too long without a drink at their size. Noticed some joint pain while doing that, and the moderately sore arm, and just a bit tired, but all-in-all not too bad at all.

Was reading that side effects can pop up much later though. As in weeks later.  Eww.  Well, it's still better than getting shingles. My grandmother had it and she also got the continued nerve pain syndrome that can sometimes follow it.  No, thenk yew!

Actually it is Shingrix according to the CDC. (We both spelled it differently)

CDC recommends that adults 50 years and older get two doses of the shingles vaccine called Shingrix (recombinant zoster vaccine) to prevent shingles and the complications from the disease.

Ah. Busted by the spelling police while under the influence.....  ::) ;D

I have to say, though, I spoke too soon. I feel like cr.... pretty unwell this afternoon, but can't manage to sleep. Which would be a blessing if I could.

I have to get the second shot towards the end of this month. I hope the experience is not as bad as the first go-round.

I had the old shingles vaccine at 60, and will be getting the new one at age 70 in just over a year’s time.

Here's hoping.

In any event, it's better to have the misery of the vaccine for a few days than to have shingles. My granny had it and was in horrible pain for quite some time. I guess I'll do it right before Thanksgiving, so I can at least watch the parades, etc., on TV to distract myself.

Interesting. Everyone, including the pharmacist, warned me that the second jab was going to be worse than the first. Aside from my feet feeling like they were freezing, and all the signs of a head-cold (with a hoarse voice), and a very slight headache this morning, yesterday's second jab hasn't been anywhere as bad as the first one was. Fingers are cross it remains that way!

Hopefully this will encourage anyone considering the series of shots, but concerned about the side effects, to go ahead and get them all.
