I am a UK citizen, who also has US citizenship. My wife is a US citizen. We will be moving from the US back to the UK at the start of 2024, and I am starting to collect everything we need for the spousal visa application.

I see from a lot of posts on here that people include WhatsApp messages, Skype messages, etc., to support their relationship. We have been together since 2014 and married since July 2016. Should we provide proof of our relationship via messaging screenshots, or is that unnecessary given we have a marriage licence, proof of co-tenancy on a lease since 2018, joint bank statements since 2016, etc?

Thank you for any advice you have!

My understanding is that the provision of WhatsApp messages is to evidence an ongoing relationship despite being apart. It would probably be a good idea to provide them for the period before your relationship began until you started cohabiting, but I do not see why you would need to do so for the period  after that given that you are providing evidence of tenancy agreements and joint bank statements.

However, I am quite new to the forum, so cannot say for sure. Hopefully one of the experts will be along to confirm.

That’s correct.

You need evidence covering the entire length of the relationship so:

Before living together/getting married, you provide:
- evidence of trips to see each other (boarding passes/flight bookings etc.)
- evidence of regular communication while apart (messages, calls etc)

Since living together/getting married:
- evidence of cohabitation (tenancy agreements/mortgage statements, utility bills, bank statements etc)… maybe a couple of items per year
