Reporting inheritance from US
« on: May 15, 2024, 02:01:33 PM »
Hi all. I am beyond frustrated!! I received a small inheritance after my mom’s death. My brother was executor in the States and transferred the money to me in January.
I have been trying to contact HMRC to report it, as I know this is required. However, I either can’t get through to an actual person or get passed to people who say I have to speak with a different department.

There doesn’t seem to be any advice about how to actually do this anywhere.

Has anyone successfully reported a US inheritance, and how did you do it?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Are you sure it has to reported? No HMRC tax will be due.

I actually have no idea!
Some advice says to report it even though there will be no tax due, other advice says it’s not necessary.

Perhaps I’ll just call it a day - I tried!

My wife and I have received several small inheritances and have never reported any.

Do you need to declare inheritance money?

No. Any tax due will normally be taken out of the deceased’s estate, and the executor will usually take care of it. This means you won’t need to declare inheritance money to HMRC – an inheritance isn’t classed as income, and therefore isn’t taxable.

Bear in mind though that you’ll need to declare any interest or dividends that you later earn from it, and you may also need to notify the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) if you’re in receipt of any benefits.

There is no UK tax on receiving an inheritance. Some people may disclose to HMRC in the white space. However, distributions from US trusts, pension plans and annuities can have significant UK tax effects. It would be helpful to know these items are relevant to the question. HMRC advice on the phone has no value in law at all, none, it is unclear why one would phone HMRC.
