Never thought I'd be back here...
« on: November 19, 2024, 02:48:57 AM »
This forum was invaluable to me when I moved to England in 2008. I lived outside of Bristol for 4 years and moved back to the US with DH (born in England) and my DS in 2012. We've lived in our town in Washington State for 12 years, built up a wonderful community here. I started a community pottery studio 3 years ago and have an established wholesale pottery business. Last time I moved to the UK, I was thrilled. This time, I'm just devastated, but in order to protect my kids and their futures, I think it's necessary.

DH works remotely for a company that has international employees. I'm looking at maybe going through teacher training. I've been subbing for our local school district and really love it.

At first we were sure we wanted to move to Scotland. My kids would like to be close to DH's family who live in Somerset (where we lived before). I'm not really that picky. I just want a place that doesn't cost a ton of money to live (ideally we'd buy a home) and is LGBTQ+ friendly.

The big questions I have because it wasn't an issue when I lived there last:
- My oldest and I both have ADHD and I'd really like to make sure we both can get our meds.
- I have no idea how schools work there or if there are certain areas where the state schools are better than others (like in the US). Both my kids are in hi-cap classes and I'm not sure what this would mean for them there. Do you just move to an area and are assigned to a school? What ages are at what type of school?
- Owning a car. We lived outside of a big city and didn't need a car. I think we'd like to have one when we go back. What costs are associated with owning a car? Are hybrid and electric cars popular over there?
- Buying a home. How is this different from the US?

Anyway, this time around, now that I'm not in my mid-20's, currently own a home that we have to sell, have two children, and have two dogs, is so much more complicated. And I'm done writing this super long intro post. Thanks for reading!

Welcome back to the site, but sorry to hear that you feel you are compelled to leave what sounds like a pretty good life you have built out there.

Our kids grew up and went entirely through the US school system so I don’t know much to help you in those questions.

When we moved back in 2016 I was on one prescription medication and when I got back one of the first things I did was register and go see a GP who said that what I was on was exactly what is prescribed here and wrote me a prescription for it. I have no idea how you will get on with your prescriptions but maybe you can look them and your condition up on the NICE website which is what guides the doctors here.

Since moving back we have bought 3 houses and helped our kids buy 3 houses. I have only ever bought and sold a house in Louisiana so have no idea how that compares to Washington State but it wasn’t too different to buying a house here in England. We have also lived in Scotland and their house buying process was quite a bit different and we needed 2 lawyers, one for the sale of our house in England and one for the purchase in Scotland. When we moved back it was a similar requirement of 2 lawyers, and that was back in the 1980s.

There are loads of hybrids and full EVs on the roads here, in fact the 2nd hand market for EVs is apparently very favorable to buyers at present. Of the almost 9 years we have been back 6 were with a hybrid and the last 3 with an EV.
