Divorce

Does anyone know how to go about a divorce if you got married in the US? I know I can file for a divorce in the UK but I read it’s easier to file in the US.

I have ILR and we both want to keep it as simple as possible.

I believe it will depend on where in the United States you have a residency. My experience has been that you have to have lived in a place (county/town) for a period of time before the courts there can process your case.  (I think an extended vacation in Las Vegas is probably the fastest way around that.)

Hope this helps, and sorry to hear it didn't work out.

I’m actually from Las Vegas so staying there for an extended vacation is no problem  ;D

Does my partner have to stay with me as well? Or can I stay for the time period needed and file on my own?

You'll want to get sound legal advice from someone in that state (I'm not a lawyer). From what I read online only one has to be a resident. But how much you can trust the interwebs....?

I know in some states you can do a "do it yourself" divorce, when there are no assets to divide and/or it's completely amiable on both sides - that is, you agree ahead of time who gets what, pay the various filing fees, and then go to court without lawyers involved. That can save a LOT of the cost.  I don't know if that's doable in Nevada, but a quick search online found this info that seems to say it is an option. - https://www.divorcenet.com/resources/uncontested-divorce-nevada.html
