Advice needed for Life in UK Study material
« on: December 31, 2024, 03:10:00 PM »
Hi all, the time have come for my wife to apply for her ILR July 2025 but due to health issues, we need to get her life in the UK test completed. I was wondering if anyone knows of good websites or anything we can use to help her brush up on what is asked so she is prepared, as I can help her with some knowledge but not sure as to what is needed.

Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance

I found reading the official Life in the UK book and the practice tests book extremely helpful in addition to the website that j4v3d mentioned. I also took notes about British history and certain things that I was rusty on. I found remembering notable British inventors and athletes (many of them olympic/paralympic athletes) the most difficult. None of the notable athletes ended up on my test after all the studying and trying to brush up on them I did.  ::) I did get a question wrong about Cricket, as I hadn't really studied the individual sports much. The question asked about the name of the tournament the UK plays against Australia. The answer was Ashes, but I put something else. Another one I regret getting wrong was confusing the Welsh and Scottish national flowers. It would have been so easy to memorize them, but for some reason I didn't. So, make sure your wife knows those. I also found memorizing the different court systems very difficult. Scotland seems to be different from the rest of the UK which made it more challenging for me. There was a question on my test about youth court. Youth courts can be presided over by specially trained magistrates or a district judge. I think I still have the notes I took when preparing my own test. They're hand-written, but I can type some up if that will be helpful. Sometimes people share their notes on the Ukvisa subreddit as well.

Just remember the joke; based on the Scots having a reputation of being tightfisted.

The English, Scots and Welsh were instructed to go to a garden centre and choose a national flower.
The English went straight to the garden centre and asked for the best flower.
That's easy, it's the rose, said the garden centre  manager. It's expensive but...
We'll take it said the English.
The Welsh arrived and saw the English leaving and said I bet they got the best flower.
The Welsh choose a daffodil.
The Scots turned up just as garden centre was closing. Sold out, said the garden centre manager.
But what about all those flowers in that field, said the Scots.
They are just thistles said the garden centre manager. If you want those, you can have them for free he laughed.
Free you say, said the Scots.

Perhaps remember too that Daffodils are spring bulbs and the Welsh like to wear that huge flower on St David's Day, which is 1 March.

Here's a simple little hint:  I found that treating the dates as times on a 24 hour clock helped me to remember them.  For example, the Magna Carta was signed at 12:15, about the time you might go out for lunch.   If you can link the historical events with actual events in your typical day, you can keep track of the general order.

I think they rarely expect you to remember exact years something happened (except for maybe the Magna Carta, but you know that one now, it's right at lunchtime) but if you know the general order of dates it's easy to pick from the multiple choices.

It's really not that hard, there's tons of sample questions on the web and those are generally the exact questions on the test.   You do have to spend time studying those exact questions but once you finish you'll pass the test fine.  I think it took me about 15 minutes to do the test.

Get a book or two.  Compared to the cost of the test, the cost of a book is trivial.

My test did not include any questions about which sport British Olympians had won. (that I remember anyway)
So I would suggest you don't worry too much about that Pub Quiz stuff

But it did include a question about the national holidays (St Andrews vs St Patrick vs St George vs St David). So you should just make sure you know all four Saints and to which nation they belong and their day..

Haha! I shared this with my half-Scottish husband, and he enjoyed it as well.  ;D

Yorkshiremen also like to say how they are tightfisted/short arms, long pockets. One Yorkshireman once proudly telling me that Yorkshiremen are like the Scots, but with all the generosity squeezed out. ;D

Thanks all for the great advice. I bought the books recommended and on her first go at a practical test she only had 3 wrong, but I will look at that website and she knows about the daffodils and St David's Day as we love in Wales and wanted to take a interest in Welsh stuff

Thanks again
