UK driving license when expat then returning

Ok, if someone has a UK driving license and moves out-of-country for a few years, can they get their license reinstated when they move back to the UK? I know it's not valid while they are out of the country.

Pretty sure the answer is yes. We left the country for 29 years and on returning applied for a new licence and didn’t have to take another driving test, just sent in our old one as part of the application.
