Social Media examination - travel to USA - Heads Up
« on: December 10, 2025, 05:29:54 PM »
In case you may have missed this:

A heads-up to anyone traveling to the U.S. from abroad: Be prepared for increased scrutiny of your online presence. Travelers from countries like Britain, France, Germany, and South Korea could soon be subject to a review of up to five years of their social media history, according to a proposal filed Tuesday (Dec 9) by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Recommendation: CBP can only review what you voluntarily disclose or what is publicly visible. Make sure your personal accounts are set to private, and maintain an alternative public-facing account for general viewing.

Do we know if this affects only new applications or whether those of us with an existing ESTA will need to provide the information before we next travel?

As far as I know it's a proposed rule change right now (Dec 12, 2025).  No sense on how fast it would go if approved. When in doubt, check with USCIS.  [If it were me, I'd proceed as if it was in effect now anyway, as they are doing things outside of regulations, it seems, so it would probably be better to be safe than sorry. No word on if requirements will be retro to existing ESTA.]
