Purple Sprouting Broccoli
« on: February 03, 2005, 09:52:46 AM »
It's what's in season!  With the Spring planting season about to begin and the gardens all up and tilled you might be just about to scream with the large amount of squash and potatoes that are about the only local produce available this time of year.  Dread no longer though because PSP has hit the shelves of your local farm store and supermarket.  Due to the warm winter in the UK the PSP is in full bloom....yes it looks a bit odd, but it is very tasty so buy a bunch and steam it or add it to your stir fry.  Try it, you'll like it if you like broccoli.  Savor the first bit of local produce! :)

Also try spring greens (usually from Cornwall) - delicious shredded and steamed with grated lemon zest or even substituted for spinach in a curry.

Purple is my favourite colour and I do like broccoli but have never been able to bring myself to eat this ... looks like it's gone off if you ask me!  ;) Does it taste different to green broccoli?

Actually it turns green once cooked so no purple to worry about.  Both this and the purple califlower are lovely and have a great taste.  Soemtimes it can be a bit stronger flavored though.  If you can eat greens then even the stronger flavour won't bother you.

With Califlower in particular think of it this way... many of these vegetables are actually older strains than the new ones.  A lot of Califlower has been modified to produce larger and whiter heads so... well....

Hmmm, my Mom isn't a huge regular broccoli fan and likes psb. She finds it milder.  :) And yes, it's not purple once you cook it! The leaves are also edible with psb whereas most folks don't eat the leaves of regular broccoli.

Anyone seen the purple carrots?!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon
