My Son
« on: February 03, 2005, 08:15:17 PM »
I was just wondering if anyone else has dealt with this. We are seeking to relocate to the UK as soon as possible.  My 15 year old son has autism and a severe developmental delay. Has anyone had to deal with the social service agencies for an situation like this? Schools, day programs, carers, etc. Just looking for information.

Thanks in advance!

Celtic,
I think a lot depends on the area where you'll be located - city v. rural, etc.  I think you'll find on the whole, however, that you'll get a lot more sympathy and financial support here (tax credits, carers allowance if you care for him in the home, disability living allowance for him, etc.).  It might not be a bad idea to start researching things now.  We have two Asperger's Syndrome students in the department where I work who get a lot of help from our Disabilities Office.

One of my best friends here has 2 autistic children, and both are in schools in Bucks.  Her ds is not as severe as her dd.  PM me if you'd like more info or to talk to her.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…
