Richmond?
« on: February 07, 2005, 03:40:40 PM »
How is Richmond (Richmond upon Thames, Greater London) for living?

We haven't visited it yet, but it's one of the neighborhoods I'm interested in.  The main draw is Richmond Park.  My gf are getting seriously into cycling (just joined a team), and would like to continue to ride regularly once we move.  We don't plan to get a car, so we won't be able to transport our bikes and need to be near good cycling areas.  I hear Richmond Park is popular, so we'd love to live near it.  I also see that there are many National Cycle routes in the area, including one along the Thames all the way out to Oxford.

I read that it's a pretty expensive area, but at first all we'll be looking for is a one bedroom flat to rent, and as a professional couple, I think we can manage that.  I also understand that it's a little far out and we might have a decent commute on our hands if we work in central London.  However, I've been doing an hour-plus driving commute each way for the past year and half, so a comparable commute on the tube is not that daunting to me.  I'd rather commute to work and be near good cycling than be close to work and find that I never ride my bike.

Anyone familiar with the area?

Richmond is gorgeous but very exclusive. (The Attenborough brothers live there across the street from each other. ) I've been in the park several times and its lovely.

Just be prepared to pay. ;) And keep in mind it'll be small. Very. Have you looked at housing prices online yet?

Yeah, I've looked at Richmond-area rentals online.  I'm figuring we'll start with a 6-month lease on a tiny place, which will give us a chance to get to know the market and our budget and figure whether we can afford better there and whether it's worth it.

Hiya!

I live just down the road from Richmond in Twickenham. And this whole area is expensive - Richmond itself you're looking at 700+ for a 1 bedroom. Richmond is on the District line into london and also SW Trains has service from the same station.  The train is about 20 minutes to Waterloo if you get the express one.  I think the tube is about 30mins? So it's not a bad commute into London. There are lots of shops in Richmond itself and lots of pubs, restaurants and cafes. It is especially lovely by the River.  And I've seen bike routes signs in the area.

Hope that helps!

I'm looking forward to visiting and checking it out.  I was thinking we'd be paying at least 850-900 for a small place.  It's crazy compared to Baltimore prices, but we'll give it a shot and see if we think it's worth the price.

Oh, does Twickenham have a tube station as well?

Yes, Twickenham has a train station.  It is on the Southwest line into London Waterloo.
