Just remeber--you can only give up something you currently do/have :\\\'(.  So, I can not give up smoking, as I've not smoked in 5 years.  I could give up caffine, as I am a coffee junkie, but that's just not going to happen!

It's a Catholic thing...not am American thing..  it's universal that way..  and yes, you can either give something up  or do something..

Yeah - and I'm not Catholic so it's just something for me to be more thoughtful in this time...I recognize that so many people want more and thinking about giving something up puts lots of stuff into perspective.

Just realized that giving up chips as well might be a great idea for me!  Gained back all that weight I lost in the beginning of the year...bummer.

As a Catholic (maybe other faiths do this too?) we are taught that Lent is not just about giving something up--it is a symbolic sacrifice to remind us of the sacrifice Christ made for us.  So, taking something on is just as important/valid as removing something from your life.  These things can be helping at a local charity every week, going to daily mass, driving those unable to drive themselves to Drs appointments, shopping centers, church, whatever.  The hope, of course, is that by the end of the 40 days you have developed a new habbit/hobby that is no longer a "sacrifice" but something you do willingly and happily.

As i mentioned in my previous post, I'm an Episcopalian, so no... it's not just the Catholics that observe Lent.
Im giving up bread for Lent, but with a view of giving it up forever because my excess consumption of it has proven to be very bad for my health.   A sacrifice at first, but i hope it will turn into a healthy habit.

Ummm, I'd say no. It's either (Yank) dessert or (Brit) pudding!  ;D
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Last year I gave up drinking pop/soda at work.  I went cold turkey and suprisingly, I did NOT get mountain dew withdrawal (5-10 cans a day, 3 flavours).   This worked until about October when I decided I was a good little boy and deserved a few treats to aid me in those stressful moments where I need to write a 60 page paper on the effects of corruption on european trade.
