Hello hello from outside Washington DC, moving to the UK
« on: February 13, 2005, 04:11:38 AM »
The subject line says it all really.  ;)  I'm engaged to an Englishman I met while getting my Master's degree at Edinburgh University in 2003.  Unfortunately my student visa expired and I had to come back to the US.  He's just finished his PhD and is job hunting.  As soon as he finds a job, the wedding plans will move forward.  Hopefully we'll be together by this summer.  Originally I was going to get a fiance/e visa for the UK and get married there.  Now I'm reading that foreigners can come to the US and get married there on a tourist visa as long as they can prove they're not planning to stay.  Has anyone had experience doing this?  Any advice on the matter is greatly appreciated.  I look forward to getting to know people here.

Not anymore with the new marriage laws. You cannot get married on a tourist visa anymore. You have to come on a fiance visa now. There is some sort of new visa for tourists wishing to marry. ie US citizens wanting to marry in scotland etc etc. but if you are marrying a uk citizen you have to apprea before them in person BEFORE you get married and have come over on the fiance visa. The law changes as of the 1st of Feb 2005

What kindredspirit said is true -- if you wanted to get married in the UK.

If you want to get married in the US, that's okay -- no fiance visa is needed if as your fiance doesn't intend on settling in the US after the marriage.  He'll enter the US on the visa waiver program, marry you, and you guys can head to the NYC consulate for your spousal visa.  Then you head to the UK together.

That's exactly what we did -- DH entered the US as a visitor and we got married a week later with no hassle.  Then we spent part of our honeymoon in NYC, where we applied for my spousal visa.  If you want to read about our experience, click on the link below.

Good luck!   ;D
