coming to uk next week for look-see trip--help
« on: February 10, 2005, 04:59:27 PM »
Hi everyone I am Sandy my husband and I are considering a move to UK.  My husbands company offered him a position the office is in Leicester.  If anyone has suggestions as to wonderful areas to live it would be greatly appreciated.  At this time we have 5 days to look around...checking out West Midlands, East Midlands and considering somewhere north of London.  Not sure what to think right now ...we have two daughters in their 20's out on their own ....course they think it is a great idea to live in UK. If I think about it too much I just get overwhelmed with the idea...one minute excited ....next well....most of you who have done this probably know how i feel.  anyway, any thoughts are appreciated.  Thanks Sandy from Dallas, Texas

I wonder what made you both think of that advice, what about an F350 ;)

I do not know the area you are visiting, though I wish you a wonderful trip!!!!!!

Come over with the bare necessities (don't go nuts just cause the company is paying for it....most of it is unusable or very impractical [ie- said referenced Humvee..lol])

....come with an open mind (don't compare US and UK or £ or $ or you'll go insane) and experience a chance to see a part of the world most Texans will never see.  Not real familiar with Leicester, altho I know its a fair piece from London to the north..lol

This coming from a fellow Texan (Arlington and Big Spring). I was terrified and elated and have never regretted the decision!

Welcome to the boards........ask away!

Okay okay so apart from large cars and guns you should be okay.... just bring some decent Tex-Mex and 'ritas and all will be well.  ;D  You know we can't let you into the UK without that... it's a new tariff! ;)

Seriously Sandy... I hope you guys have a great trip over.... I suggest posting in other parts of the board about places to live... I am in the SW and love it, but it means I know very little about the area you are thinking about.

Moving is a bit scarey, but if you come with an open mind and are work well with change then you should be fine.  If not then try to take a look at websites and books on dealing with change and books like Living and Working in England or the UK.  Take a look at the food section or at local supermarkets when you get here and think of things that you will miss if you don't have them.....  anyways I am babbling... welcome to the site!

I'm not sure how long you will be here, but if you looking to relocate, be sure to come in a 'everyday' frame of mind and not as tourist.  Do things like go to the grocery store, look at cars, try to figure out commutes, neighbourhoods, public transport.  Look at the size of washing machines, fridges.  Prepare yourself for everyday living in the UK.

The better prepared you are for the differences between the two countries, the better you will be able to settle in once you get here.

Good luck!

Hello and welcome. I live in Coventry West Mids. I like Coventry but if I could afford to move I would move to Stratford :)

Welcome and you've gotten great advice...it is scary & exciting but it may be the best thing that ever happened to you.  There are so many cool opportunities you have when you live in Europe - travel to other countries is much cheaper, you can be exposed to new & different ideas and you'll learn a lot.  I feel like I'm still new after almost 7 months, but loving it just the same.  Best of luck to you!

I know Leicester fairly well, as very good friends live there - so, here are my thoughts (and those of my friends) for what they are worth!

It's an industrial  city of about 280,000 people.  It has the highest ethnic popualtion of any UK city outside London - mainly Indian/Pakistani origin, as they were attracted to the city after WWII to work in the clothing factories.  It's quite a busy, buzzy kind of place, with some attractive, historic buildings, but is pretty much a 'work a day' kind of a town.  Leicester is somewhat overshadowed by nearby Nottingham and Birmingham, with their greater choice of cultural and shopping facilities.  Also, Leicester is only 1 hr 10 mins from London by train, so you'll not be too far from all that London has to offer.  Anyway, see what you think of the city when you are over!

However short distances may seem compared to TX, you'll need to factor in the traffic - this is one crowded island and at times it can seem like everyone is on the road!  If your husband is working in the city centre of Leicester, he may want to consider commuting by train?

The surrounding county, Leicestershire, is largely rural, with a network of small, historic market towns and villages and very attractive countryside.  Most towns/villages re prosperous and are very 'commutable'.  Melton Mowbray, Market Harborough and Oakham are worth a look while you are over.  All 3 towns are on a train line into Leicester.

We recently relocated from London to Yorkshire and found that buying a copy of the local paper gives you a useful insight into what a town might be like.

Have fun on your trip!

What great advice from all of you who responded.  We will be looking around for a week.  Leaving tomorrow(Tue) and staying thru next Wed.. The company my husband works for has us hooked up with relo people. At this time, they have us scheduled for Midlands(west and east) and just north of London.  We do not have a Humve, although seems as if many dallas folk do ..how about my pick-up???  and I will be sure to leave my six-shooter at home.  I wonder .....anybody from Wisconsin or Illinios??? I am originally from Wisconsin, my husband from Illinios we also spent 18 years in Indiana our two daughters go to IU.  Anyway, again thank you I feel much better about my trip then I did a weekago.
Sandy
