If you are on a a US passport and will be in the UK for less than 6 months, not working or studying or intending to settle permanently then you don't need a visa at all, as you will just be here as a "visitor" from a visa free country.

Thanks, so.. I will be living in Italy for 1 year, recieving a passport for that country.  what you are saying is that I will be able to go to London without a passport because I will only be visiting.  I should mention I am going to italy for an aupair position so when i travel to London I am doing so to pick the elder 3 children up from boarding school, then return them 3 weeks later.

Hello - I think you have used the word "passport" where perhaps you meant "visa"? I'm just posting to check as it's kinda vital to have a passport to travel between countries.  In addition to a passport (issued by the country of which you are a citizen, valid for - typically - 10 years) you sometime require a visa for a country you're going to visit and issued by them.

USA citizen on US passport coming to the UK.  Typically fine for a visit of up to 6 months. BUT you still need a visa in some circumstances, for example if you've got a criminal record, or if it your paperwork is unclear and it looks like you might be in the UK for longer.  You would also need a visa if you were going to be working here.

Visa for Italy - sounds like you have that already planned.

No doubt you'll also have paperwork from the people you'll be working with to pick up their children from the school (schools won't just release kids to anyone  ;) ) and you'll be given their passports when you collect them.  If they've got either Italian or UK passports, they will not need additional visas to travel between these two countries.

Hope that clarifies things a bit more.  There another board on this forum - "Visas and Citizenship" - where a lot more people with personal experience in this sort of thing read and post. You would do well to ask further there if Britwife and I (and anyone else who comes to T&T) doesn't have a full answer for you.  You'll also find plenty of recommended links on that other board to the official government sites, etc
