Is there a doctor in the house?
« on: February 22, 2005, 08:38:19 AM »
I've been sick since Sunday with the flu, or something like it (fever, chills, cough, etc.).  I think I sould go to the doctor but as I've only been living here since August I have no idea who to go to.  I've heard the "wonders" about the UK NHS system.

Can anyone tell me?  Do I just go to an ER or do I need to find a GP?  Is there a listing of GP's somewhere?  Can anyone recommend a good doctor?

Please let me know.  I've been in the house since Sunday living on Day Nurse and Night Nurse and am beginning to go out of my mind.  I did get up to go to work today but very quickly realized that I was not go for launch.

Thanks,

Sick and Stir Crazy in St John's Wood (a.k.a Aaron)

First, you need to find where your local doctor is and sign up. They call them "surgeries" here, so don't worry, you won't be getting an operation there  ;)

Start by visiting this web site:
http://www.nhs.uk/england/doctors/localSearch.aspx

This MAY just end up being informational...for future reference.

What they really like for you to do is read an online FAQ to see if you're sick enough to make an appointment.

They explain on this web page:
http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/selfhelp/index.asp

You may have to call NHS Direct on 0845 4647 for advice.

And just as an aside to others - register with the GP when you get here.  That way you know who to go to or call when you actually get sick - and they know you, too.

If you have flu (and there is are some bad strains  around at the moment) most GPs will tell you to take Paracetemol  or similar, lots of fluids and stay in bed and drink lots of fluids until you feel better. There isn't anything they will prescribe for it and getting to the surgery and waiting in a queue will only make you feel worse. Lisa's idea of ringing NHS direct for reassurance is a good one.
