Yes...it is in Zone 1 and Hampstead is in Zone 2/3...it is also closer in terms of transport.  And you'd find it much easier to get to the school from Marylebone than from Hampstead...MUCH easier.  You are also close to a main road out of London.

Check out the tube map and you'll see what I'm talking about:

You can get the Marylebone and Baker Street Stations in Marylebone...the Regents Park station is not far away.

Onetiger: Good to hear from you again.  I just got off the phone with ASL and received a bit of bad news.  It seems that the K classes for next year are completely filled. :(   :\\\'(  It doesn't make much sense for me to enroll my 7 year old in 2nd grade and then have the other 2 kids attend a different school.  Based on your experiences, is it likely that a spot will open up in K? ???

Having been exposed to the traffic in and out of London the past few days, I am re-thinking about living too far away from the office.  Marylebone sounds wonderful given that it's closer to the A40 which leads to Uxbridge.

It does happen as kids move unexpectedly all the time here...avg. kid stays about 4 years.  You might want to check into other schools though just in case...sorry to hear about the bad news!

Is your job in Uxbridge?  Because if I had kids, I'd rather live out there than in Marleybone.  Cost of living will be cheaper in Uxbridge and the traffic on the A40 is awful during rush hour.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

FYI, we never have any issues parking in Marylebone with our permit.  not many people have resident permits!  :)

Gables, Marylebone IS central London. It is just above Oxford Street in the center of town. It doesn't feel very busy/crowded, though-it has quite a neighborly feel to it. Lots of cafes and interesting shops and pretty squares. You can get anywhere in about 15-20 minutes. I don't know about parking--We don't have a car, and are going to try to exist without one. My husband works in the City and can get there in under 20 minutes by tube, including walking time to and from the station.  At Baker Street you have the Metropolitan, Jubilee, Circle, Hammersmith and City lines (and Bakerloo too? Can't remember) or you can walk to Bond Street tube in 10 min for the Central line.  We loved Hampstead too, because it is green and pretty and doesn't feel like you are in the City, but we ultimately rejected it because we prefer to be in the heart of things while we are here--and because it adds so much time to our commute. If my husband and I are working in central London, it would add an extra 20 minutes commute time because of changing trains, etc. With two tiny ones at home we wanted to be able to get to them as quickly as possible if we needed to, and we wanted to be able to spend that extra 20 minutes at the end of the day with them rather than on the tube. Plus, the Northern Line always seems to have delays.  ??? But apparantly a lot of Americans like Hampstead because it is more like home--houses rather than flats, residential rather than urban. It IS very pretty and very chic.

We did get the flat, for 100 pounds/week less than the landlords were asking! Whoo hoo! I am so excited--they are putting hardwood in the double reception, recarpeting the bedrooms, and painting. If you decided to go the Marylebone route, do go with McGlashans. They were great--and we worked with about 15 different agencies over the last two months, so we should know!  ;)

Hey if you marylebone people ever need a babysitter for a night out.....  I'm a block from the high street.  :)

DH and I watch our friend's daughter for them and love it.

Just a thought!

And yes, bakerloo is also at baker street. I love that tube station as i have 5 different ways to get to Tower Hill!

And good call about the 20 min with your family instead of on the tube.....

Hey, Aimiloo, be careful--I might just take you up on that! We're staying on Chiltern Street now,but will be moving to Nottingham Place on the 24th. Could it BE any more convenient??  ;D Do you recommend any good restaurants or pubs in the area? We've been to kid-friendly Giraffe (balloons, kiddie menus) and Patisserie Valerie countless times already but I think we are going to go ahead and find a babysitter to come by once a week so we can have adult conversation, sans balloons.  ;)

lvolz, i'm so not kidding!  PM me, i know how hard it is to find someone trustworthy....and well, i've babysat from age 13-22 so i know the ropes!  and since we're not planning for a family for another 2 years, it would be great!

Also my husband travels for work a lot (usually 2 weeks out of the month) so it's not like it would be killing my social life!  :)

We only moved there a few months ago.  A great place for an AMAZING, yet a big costly meal is Michael Moore.  We love it there. The chef is great (we've had a chat a few times) and they have an affordable set menu.  It's almost right across from giraffe.

Eat and 2 veg is good for vegitarian food....good stuff if the men can ditch meat for a meal :)

We go to wagamama on wigmore st. about 3 times a month.  :)

St. Christopher place has SO many nice places......but we try new places all the time.  We love to eat out!!!!

Hi, I would definitely recommend the American school! Chelsea is a great place, and expensive, however, if your employer is paying for it - go for it! I would definitely get private healthcare!!!!!!! Free healthcare is great, unless, you are really injured or sick...London is a great place, after you overcome the first initial frustrations as an American moving here - you just have to laugh though!  It all gets sorted in the end. Things happen very slowly. Enjoy your adventure. Your kids will have many a story to tell their friends back home.

Cheers mate,
ap

'life is not measured in the number of breaths you take, yet in the moments that take your breath away'

and you will have many moments! just enjoy the ride, mate.

Aimiloo, I've seen Michael Moores, and wanted to go there. And Orrery too, if we are ever flush. Maybe we should have an expat meetup--you and me and our spouses too for dinner in the area. We'd love to have you babysit the Goblins, but we'd like adult conversation even more!  ;D
