Son's school project - a Leprechaun Trap

I'm often asked if I feel like I'm back in the US...

Well, today, Yes, I feel like I'm in the US

I've just gone through my son's backpack with his homework.  He has an assignment to "Make a Leprechaun Trap"

Basically, the instructions are to collect scrap materials (boxes, bags, spools, yarn etc.).

Design the trap.   Sketch out the plan.  (Be clever, smart and tricky, etc.)  Be ready to explain how your trap works.  Bring trap to school and demonstrate it.

It gives guidance on what leprchauns like, explains that they don't always obey signs, that they like shiny objects, etc.



I can't stop laughing!

I like how the project gets the kids thinking about designing a plan, following the plan, making the project and preparing to present it to the class.

I just can't stop chuckling at the specs of this assignment, though.

Maybe it's just me....

Aww that's cute. My friend's son did that last year for a school project and she said they had so much fun making it together. She was supposed to take pictures and send them to me when they were done. Hmm..I'll have to remind her of that now.

That's so cool.  They have pretty cool projects there.  My nephew once made a 'Flat Stanley' and sent him to us in a letter and we had to take photos of him doing things with us (we of course took him to all the London landmarks) and then send him back with a letter.  I thought that was the best project. 

My son is really into it.  Last night, he sketched out his design and now I'm saving bits and pieces of stuff so that we can build it together.

Basically, he wants to build a stage on posts with a trap door in the floor.  He plans to use objects that Leprechauns love, a necklace, gold, hat, pipe (I think I'll throw in a Guiness ) to lure said leprechauns onto the trap door.  Since leprechauns allegedly do not obey signs and are tricky, he wants to make a sign that says "Leprechauns:  Do not walk on this!" 

There will also be a little forest with a rainbow coming out from the treetops, leading to the lovely objects...  Underneath the trap door he wants to place a jar in which to catch the leprechaun.

This project is coming off of the back end of studying Leonardo DaVinci.  The kids learned all about his life, inventions, art and the Renaissance period in which he lived.  So, I think they're tying in "inventions" into the whole St. Patrick's Day thing...

Mindy, I've heard of Flat Stanley before.  It's a fun way for kids to learn about other places.  You guys must have had fun zipping around London photographing everything for your nephew!
