Thanks, liz. bv, you have your answer. You know what to look out for: any place that is overwhelmingly WASP-y. If you see no dark skin there, of any shade (black, Middle Eastern, Hispanic, etc.), leave. If you hear any violent speech about Muslims, Catholics, immigration, asylum-seekers, job-stealers, you name it, leave. If you hear talk of "people taking over England," leave. As an American, you have the advantage that even the dumbest m-f--ker on the planet knows you wouldn't leave the U.S. for no reason. But the fact you have an Asian background negates that. Liz and I have talked about the repercussions of her having an Iranian parent. I had a friend in college in the Iranian hostage days that took a lot of sh*t for that. There's no reason to be scared in the UK. Just be sensible about where you go.

It's all a little complacated to know.

Canary Wharf, for all its re-development was historically London's main dock area. The Wapping/Poplar/Bermonsey area is a poor white enclave in an otherwise poor multiethnic part of London. Its a fairly traditional Nazi area.

I personally wouldn't drink in any back street boozer round there.

Bad pubs are generally easy to spot, sticky floors, obnoxious staff. I worry about the beer give you food poisoning.

Other than that skinheads are best avoiding and, unless there's a big soccer championship on, lots of Union flags. As a nation, we don't display flags a lot. Any pub that does is a little worrying.
