Banking: a resource for new arrivals?
« on: March 30, 2005, 08:41:30 PM »
Anyone heard of or used Destination UK from Barclays?

I stumbled across it in doing some research on bank accounts.  Basically, if you are a foreigner moving the UK, have/will have a salary of 25K (pounds) or more, and will have your salary deposited into the Barclays account, you're eligible.  You still have to do the standard proof of identity and of residence.  You'll get a current account with a cheque book and debit card, plus a Barclaycard Gold Visa credit card.  Because I've read so much about how it's hard to get a first credit card over there, that last bit really caught my eye.

Here's the link: Destination UK

25,000 pounds annually (almost US$50,000), is quite a large salary to require just to open a bank account.

The salary requirement isn't for the bank account.  It's just a current account that they give you, which anyone can get from a local branch.  The requirement is for the total package, which includes the ability to apply for the credit card immediately, and what basically sounds to me like some of their personnel giving you personal attention and talking to you about how best to arrange your finances for your needs.

The only part that sounded attractive to me was the credit card.
