Stereo Auxilary cables - iPod monster cable thing
« on: April 14, 2005, 10:15:19 PM »
I got an Monster iCable for my iPod while in the states, supposed to be able to stick it in the back of any stereo and hook up my iPod to hear it via the stereo speakers. So far so good. Only either my stereo here is crap (could be) and the holes are the wrong size (they are too big for the cable connectors) or there is a difference in the wiring and I'll have to get the UK version of the iCable from Dixon's after all. Anyone know? Should aux cables fit regardless or are they specific to region? Thanks

In my unprofessional opinion, the cables should be working everywhere. I think though you are trying to plug the cable directly into the speaker sockets of the stereo while you should plug it into an outlet for CDs/Phono/DVD in the rear of the stereo. Then again, could you specify what kind of stereo you have?

Nope, am sticking it in the aux holes in the back of the stereo, not the speaker holes (cause the speakers are plugged into those). I will confess to trying all plugs in all holes when the obvious wasn't working and nothing worked. The plugs from the cable were just a hair too small for the aux holes in the back of the stereo. This is a Goodman's.

I have another stereo in the house to try the cables on but did not want to go through the bother of pulling it out of the shelf away from the wall moving the furniture to get at the back of it if the cables weren't going to fit. That's a Panasonic.

I thought they should be universal too but who knows.

mmm ... that's weird. Sorry, I can't be of more help. Perhaps you could take your cables to a Dixons' and compare them to the UK cables or show them to a knowledgeable employee and ask for their advice. If you should need to buy different cables though, try a price comparison site like Kelkoo first ... when I came back to the UK, I bought a computer power lead at Dixons and payed around £8 only to find them for £1.50 (!) at an online computer parts store later!

You can get a thing from Belkin that goes into your cassette player, fits both front and side-loading players, and plugs into the speaker hole in the iPod. Then you get a battery charger that goes from the bottom of the iPod to the cigarette lighter so you are running off the car battery instead of the iPod when playing. I got them both in the states at Target, great investment and you should be able to find them easily here. That's what made me want to get the stereo hookup cause it is really cool to be able to listen to your whole cd collection at the once.

You can also get a doohickey that plays the iPod thru your car's FM stereo but I have heard dodgy reports on that, it's much easier to just go direct via the cassette player.

That's because Dixons is the Devil. Never go to Dixons.

UPDATE - I moved the furniture and the Panasonic and it works. Fits fine. So these cables are universally compatible, unless you have a cheap Goodmans stereo.

Yep--it's called iTrip. I have one--works pretty good.
