smoke alarms
« on: May 02, 2005, 10:53:04 PM »
Now that I have had a 'minor mishap' in my kitchen (let's just say, no more stove top popcorn!), the landlord is insisting on coming in and 'inspecting' the 'stain' (the soot I'm having trouble cleaning off the ceiling) before 'giving further advice' on what to do next.  Since I know he's coming, I'm not sure if I want to risk a paint job myself just yet, but...
(here's my question)
Are landlords not required by law to put in smoke alarms?  Is it too bold of me to ask?  He's very nice, and takes care of things, albeit a little too well.  Meaning, he replaced my dresser within a week of my asking, but sadly from the same 'Landlords Land o'Cheap Crap' that he got the first one from, and then had 'concerns' when he noticed I'd changed the handles - the handles - on it (temporary, mind you).
So - smoke alarms?

It's the law that smoke alarms must be provided and in proper working order upon letting a property.  If he didn't put them in, he's in the wrong.  I have 4 in my flat that only has 5 rooms!  I set the kitchen one off all the time, even if nothing is remotely smokey.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

This is very interesting....we just moved out of a second floor flat in London and had to put our own smoke alarms in!  I just assumed it wasn't required of the landlord since he's been letting the flat out for ages and no one else seemed to worry about it!  I'm glad to hear it is a requirement.

So the popcorn actually caught on fire?  Wow!   ;)

Same here.  No smoke alarms in our rented flat either.  We bought our own.
Insert wonderfully creative signature here …

We rented a house for six months when I first moved here and the house had two smoke alarms one on each floor. We had a check shee from the letting agency stating there were smoke alarms. Im sure its the law.

Sorry about your popcorn!

Did you put 3 kernels in?  When they pop then you know it's done...and you don't burn the pot!   ;D
