New and need advice
« on: April 13, 2005, 07:53:05 PM »
Hi,

Just found this site !

Ok, I am British but have lived in the US for 4 yrs first California and then New England.  We are about to return home (North Yorkshire) and need some advice about schools.  My kids are 5 and 7 and have been wholly educated in the US.  Despite being born in the UK they have little knowledge of it and so I'm a worried about how they will adjust.

In particular my son who is repeating first grade (his reading is behind grade level) here will I've been told go into Year 3.  I'm having a hard time trying to find out exactly what is taught in Year 3 (the whole Key Stage thing is a mystery to me!!) could anyone explain roughly what the parallel is ?

Any advice on this would be appreciated

Thanks

Rebecca

Hi and welcome to UKY!  I have moved this to our parenting section so that hopefully people can tell you a bit more about what you need to know!

The Key Stages basically break down into what the US considers primary, intermediate, jr. high and high school.

KS1= K-2nd grade
KS2=3rd-5th grade
KS3=6th-8th grade
KS4=9th-11th grade
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Hello and welcome
I moved to the UK with my 2 and 5 year old sons. My 5 year old started year 1 a few weeks after he arrived. He had no trouble at all adjusting and in fact he was very popular for the first few weeks because he was the "American Kid". He loves school and had absolutely no trouble adjusting.
Best of luck
