Prenatal Care Costrs
« on: April 26, 2005, 08:08:56 PM »
sorry if this has been posted before.
My friend is having a baby here in teh states. She just got a bill for like 5000  dollars!
if its a boy its already 360 bucks to circumsize the sucker!
what are the costs around there in the UK?
I know there is free health care but that's basic stuff right?

Just wondering i was like OMG  what is that gonna be like for me?

The NHS covers ante natal care, child birth and post natal care, including care of the baby.  You also get free prescriptions during pregnancy and for a year afterwards. Oh and free dental care too. babies & children also get free prescriptions. Circumcision is only done on the NHS if it is being done for purely medical reasons, otherwise you can get it done privately - costs vary from doctor to doctor.  So don't worry Shala, if you have a baby over here it's not going to cost you an arm and a leg.

This is a bit off topic but I have 4 sons. My two American sons are circ. My two Brit sons are not. In the hosp. here it wasnt even questioned whether I wanted my baby circ. I mean really its not necessary. I have two older brothers that had a Bris ceremony when they were babies because we are Jewish. I know they do do it here privately but I think its mostly for religious reasons. If I could do it all over again I would NOT have my eldest sons circ. Its just not necessary.
While I was preg. I researched this topic and found that 80% of the male population in this world are NOT circ.  :o

There is quite a debate over in the States if circumcision should not be performed.  I have read some people think it is a form of child abuse.

There is quite a debate over in the States if circumcision should not be performed.  I have read some people think it is a form of child abuse.

Well, at a minimum, a human should be allowed to decide if he wants genital intergrity or not.  Making that decision for any human, boy or girl (Female Genital Mutilation) is abuse.  The World Health Organization affirms there is absolutely NO health benefit from circumcision.  No insurance company should pay for it either.  It's 'cosmetic' at best.  Certainly not medically indicated.

But with the recent lawsuits (won) against doctors and parents who circ'd, things are changing in the States.  Among other factors (toward change).  Where we used to live in the States, only 40% of the boys were circ'd  Sadly, midwest and south states tend to have high circ rates.
