George Eliot
« on: April 28, 2005, 07:14:55 AM »

I've been reading The Mill on the Floss and I'm stunned that I've not picked up anything by Eliot before! I don't suppose a writer of her depth and accomplishment needs a recommendation, but I'll do it anyway. A definite two thumbs up.
I know I'm late - where's the booze?

Hey, I live in Nuneaton, George Eliot's home town. The library where I work houses the George Eliot Collection and people come from all over to have a look at it. If you're interested, contact me and I'll talk to the local studies librarian. :)

Try 'Middlemarch' now. Long but brilliant! It's was serialised on Woman's Hour on Radio 4 recently - you might be able to listen online:

Carla - cool! Have you been yourself? Going to a library to stare at books is just the kind of geeky thing I like to do! ;)

I almost picked up Middlemarch as I'd actually heard of the book before and it was sitting right next to The Mill on the shelf. I ended up grabbing the latter because  it was cheaper (those "close to pay-day days") and it is supposed to be quite autobiographical.  I'm enjoying it immensely.

She was very adventuresome for a woman of her time, wasn't she? Running away to another country with a married man.  I'll most definitely read more.
