Citations -Help ME!!!!!
« on: April 15, 2005, 04:06:27 PM »
Okay after trying to understand the Harvard citation method and looking for a style manual that follows it on Amazon I am about to scream.  I have APA, Turabian (Chicago Style), and MLA.

They want Harvard...so where is the book on it?  I see a few online sources mostly from Austrailia, but I WANT A BOOK to keep referring to.  I mean okay so it is this:

Huffman, L. M. 1996, `Processing whey protein for use as a food ingredient',
Food Technology, vol. 50, no. 2, pp. 49-52.

or

Groenewegen, D. (1997), The Real Thing?: The Rock Music Industry and the Creation of Australian Images, Moonlight Publishing, Golden Square, Victoria.

or well a plethora of others...

can someone give me the name of a damn refernce book?  Anyone? Can you tell who is not getting anywhere?  Grrrrrrrrrr.

Oh and one of my supervisors uses the above method, but puts the full first name of the authors...

so aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaH!

If the Dept insists on that style, then they have to provide you with the means to get it. A few examples won't cut it. Hold your ground... a style manual is serious business. I use Chicago and it's several hundred pages long - a hard bound edition that's probably already in need of updating. If they can't give you the means to get a proper reference guide, tell them you'll choose another style.

It's all BS anyway. There's no significant difference between the styles at the end of the day - within the appropriate discipline. It's just a matter of consistency.

Check the Uni regulations, too. If the Dept can't provide a style manual, the Uni may have a default one.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I hate to sound too "non-academic", but is citation the same as referencing?  If so, that's what we use a UOP and your more than welcome to have my guide on it or if you'd like to meet me at the library one day, I can get a book on it for you (just looked it up and there seems to be about 3-4 but they are calling it reference systems).

I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner!  There is no "Harvard method" of citation.  I know because I worked there with students for 20 years while earning my own bachelor's and master's degrees.  Depending on the field and professors' preferences, a student would use the MLA, APA, Chicago MoS, or Indicus Medicus.

I'll be back in the States next week.  When I can get to the campus, I'll pick up a few reference guides to bring back to the UK.   I was the Assistant Director of the ALM Program (see below).  When I have reliable internet access, I'll volunteer to help.

http://www.extension.harvard.edu/2004-05/libarts/alm/reqs/thesis.jsp    and
http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~expos/sources/     may help in the meantime.
When I find a funnier sig than twistedncynical's, it will be here.
