Thrift stores/garage sales
« on: June 09, 2005, 03:51:59 PM »
A few years ago, a friend turned me on to the idea of recycling from the standpoint of buying more durable goods (furnishings, etc.) that are used instead of buying new.  While I can't say I do it all the time, I've purchased quite a few used items (bookshelves, alarm clocks, toasters, etc.) from garage sales and thrift shops.  My husband & I are moving to the Glasgow area in August and I'm wondering what the equivalent of garage sales and thrift shops might be in the UK and how to find them.

BTW, I've posted several questions and I want to thank all of you for welcoming me and giving me advice!  I'm excited beyond words about the upcoming move and finding this site where there are so many helpful people has really made me look forward to moving there even more! ;D

Garage sales - car boot sales here.  People load up their cars with stuff and sell it in big fields.  Kinda like a flea market.

Thrift shops - charity shops.  You'll know them when you see them because they're on every high street!   :)

Some larger charity shops also sell furniture.  Our local Bethany shop does.  Most, however, sell clothes and other small items.

CashConverters, the local pawn shop, also sells some appliances in excellent nick.

And many places have some great outdoor markets where they'll sell used furniture...

You can also look at www.freecycle.org     It is a great way to recycle household goods.
I have recycled all kinds of items from a childs bed to computer equiptment.
Go to the site and and click "international"  scroll down to UK and have a look at Glasgow.

Goodluck

Most cities will also have small, independent shops selling used furniture or appliances. We've bought a few pieces of furniture this way as well as a dryer and small chest freezer.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

slight hijack:  Has anyone heard of the huge annual carboot sale in Lille, France? It's called the Braderie or something? Some friends and I are thinking of going over for the weekend in September.

And don't forget jumble sales, usually in church halls or at schools.  Not for furniture, mainly clothes, shoes and bric a brac  but lots of fun, get those elbows out!

Oh, that sounds like fun!

I doubt I can do it this year, but maybe next! How do you return all of your buys back home, I wonder?

Let's take our wigs off in the shopi aisle and fight it out.

You bring along a very large empty suitcase, I imagine!!
