Weaning from bottle
« on: May 12, 2005, 05:04:44 PM »
When my daughter turned 1 year old over 8 years ago I stopped her from the bottle overnight as she was never attached to it. My son on the other hand loves his bottle. He will do all he can to have it around, even if it is empty. Any advice on how to wean him from it? He will be 11 months on the 16th and I would love him to be off the formula and bottle by his first birthday. If he still has it after 1 I will not die or anything but I would love him to be off it.

Our daughter interchanges between a cup and a bottle and she's nearly two.  I admit:  I had a bottle till I was 3.   :o

IME, I've found 'weaning' to be less of a big deal in Britain.  It's most child-led.  When the child doesn't want it anymore, don't give it.

Children aren't supposed to be given cow's milk before age 1, but after DD's first birthday we gradually introduced it.

We kept our son on normal formula until he was 18 months, but that was because he was on soy for the first year.  On his first birthday, we simply stopped giving him a bottle.  We had introduced a cup before that, so he was comfortable with them and never seemed fussed about missing his bottle.

My three year old still wants his "ba ba"!!!
He is the only one (so far) of my sons that is very attached to it. I think it has something to do with Jack having bottles.

My youngest daughter was completely breast fed(much to the horror  of family and her doctor) until her 1 birthday. I began giving her  sips of water from a cup at 6 months. Whether by design or chance, her last breast feeding was day of her birthday :( She took to a cup like a duck to water). She had her special cup(not a sippy) and used it till she was 2. Note. Oldest daughter refused to breastfeed and used a bottle till she was 2.  My advice to you is switch to a smaller bottle and when it is empty offer the cup. Stand lovingly firm, have patience, and good luck.  Andrea

My son, when he was about six or 8 months, took to a sippy cup right away, and we just cut down on the bottle, I took away the afternoon, before nap one, then the night before bed one, he still takes milk(whole) at night, but from a mug with a straw. He does still have a morning bottle, the only one, when he wakes up in the morning, but that's just to prolong breakfast for an hour or so, so he can eat with us. He will be two on wednesday. Also, weird thing, he would NEVER hold his own bottle, not until he was 18 months or so!! But I blame that on myself, I was never the parent who would prop his bottle on a blanket or pillow, I always held it for him, and he just kinda figured that was mom and dad's job, to hold the bottle for him. But he took the cup immediately, kids are just funny that way! ::)

Calvin's getting close to 11 months old (ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!) - and we've been giving him a beaker/sipper cup for months now, he has refused milk in it in the past, but once he hits 11 months, we're going to try again and perserve this time. i also would like him off the bottle by 1 year, but if it goes a bit past that i'm not going to mind much, but would like him off the bottle by no later than 13-14 months old...

For some strange reason, my son would not take milk from his sippy cup, he had it in his mind that it was for juice only, and that's when I had to give him milk from a cup with a straw.
