This thread idea is fab. Would be great to have this for areas across Europe!

My nomination for a good hotel in London is the Citadine chain - specifically at Barbican and Holborn. Citadines are 'apartment/hotels' so they are more like studio flats than hotel rooms. E.g. They have a mini-kitchen so you can make your own coffee, breakfast. Some of the rooms have sofa beds which may or may not be a good thing depending on your circumstances.

My mother has stayed there 2 times now and it's perfect for her, particualry the Barbican one. It's quiet on weekends, walking distance to St Pauls and safe. It is a bit more expensive than some of the other hotels people have mentioned, but in my mind it's the kind of place you'd put your Mom.... A perfect 3 star. If I recall, the rates are around £80-£90 per night, but do check online to confirm.

Also, you can book online with them and they have a no charge for cancellation policy. [In fact that might be somethign to discuss b/c i think that is an EU or UK standard so it takes a lot of risk out of booking early]..

Oh yes - two more recommendations for London.

>If you are on a budget but don't want a hostel: County Hall Travel Inn is supposed to be excellent value for money. It is also well situated for the active tourist.

>And for those who are wanting a less expensive hostel experience, there is a small hostel near St. Pauls which is in a lovely, quiet, historical part of town. It is called the City of London hostel and is listed with the YHA:

It has rates of £20 - £25...

You can go to the World Youth Hostel Association and bye a yearly membership.  The hostels take families. couples and single.  My nice stay in one in New York for New Years Eve. Bed and breakfast was $25.00.  She said everyone was from all over the world. It was a nice bed and breakfast place that accepted the Youth Hostel card.

if you are going to Bristol, i like the City Inn Hotel. They have branches in London and a few other cities as well. We booked for a weekend (one night) at Bristol and were very happy with it. For 65 pounds, we get a very nice room (small but modern), a bottle of red wine and buffet breakfast. The food at the restaurant is very good also. We would definitely going back there.

Brief update .. "Travel Inn" previously referred to in this thread is now "Premier Travel Inn".  See http://www.premiertravelinn.com/ for their site. Still (personally) my choice when I'm away on business - a good clean room, typically with wireless internet available, at a reasonable price.  Not recommended if you're looking for character (but there are exceptions such as the County Hall location), or for bargain basement.
