Should i be getting a refund under UK tax code 474L ??
« on: June 14, 2005, 10:46:35 PM »
Hi guys...i need help in trying to figure out if i should be getting any refund or money back for tax year 2004 .

Ok i started my job around september 04 and was under the tax code 474L . I was NOT under the emergency tax code . I earned less than £4,270 for 2004 ( i believe that is the minimum amount one can make before they get taxed ) . Anyway my question is should i be getting any money back since i made less than £4,270 for 2004 . I am married if that makes any difference. I read a TNT magazine that suggested that if you make less than £4,270 and was NOT on emergency tax, you should get a refund.

Any advice much appreciated.

Zu.

Have you asked Inland Revenue?

No, but seeing how things normally work here..i figured they would ask me to consult a tax specialist.

No, they shouldn't... find out which Inland Revenue office your company deals with (they are regional). Did your employer give you a P60? If so, send a copy of that with a letter to IR asking them if you are due a refund. My DH just did this and he got a refund quite quickly.

I honestly dont' know which code he was under but IR is there to figure it all out! You might want to ask them if you should have your code changed if you'd prefer the money now rather than as a refund.

BTW, DH may have been lucky with his quick reply. I've also had a tax query (though a far, far more complicated one) and I'm still waiting for a reply. His was in about 2 weeks.

I'm assuming you are questioning your tax code as well as whether or not you are due a refund. Everyone in the UK does not write IR every year for refunds - so there must be tax codes that are going to correctly work for you. I could be wrong. I'm new to this, too. But DH seems to think we should not be having to do this on a yearly basis - and he's British so I hope he knows better than I do! Just write them or even ring them!
