Married Filing Separately versus Single
« on: June 15, 2005, 10:19:12 PM »
It's my understanding that when I, a US citizen married to a UK citizen and both living together in the UK, file my US taxes, I have to file "married filing separately" (if I don't want to file jointly and report my husband's worldwide income). Can I not file "single" instead, since he wouldn't be filing in the US at all? I don't like the idea of being penalized just because I happen to be married to an "alien" and living outside the US, for example when dealing with AMT deduction thresholds... grrrrr.

Thanks for your help!
