Application questions.........
« on: June 28, 2005, 01:04:35 PM »
Has anyone ever called the place where they applied to try to find out the status of an application? Do employers frown on this?

I've applied two places so far, and I haven't heard anything yet. One of them was only on Friday but the other was last week. That store isn't open yet, but I'm getting so antsy waiting. I want to help contribute to bills and such, because I feel bad that Jamie has to do it all on his own. Plus, not working is starting to depress me a bit.

I've found that the turnaround time here can be quite long.  The closing date for my current job was 2 Feb and my interview wasn't until 23 March!  Give them another week or two before you call.

Right there with ya - totally depressed from not working for a while....

Keep in mind that most (if not all) jobs over here have an advertised "closing date." That means you won't hear word one until after that magic date. Then there is usually a day or two set up for interviews and that's it. It's a strict system - I was called for an interview not long ago and the date was while I was out of the country and they pretty much just said "OK" and I never heard from them again despite making it very clear that I wanted to talk to them and would be very flexible once I returned.... The closing and interview dates are usually not negotiable.

So I wouldn't call anyone if I were you. But you could go back and check the ad - it should list the closing date.... The jobs that I've been applying for usually give a good few weeks to take in applications. And one of them just closed on Friday and I still haven't heard anything....  :(

Good luck!!!

Thanks for the advice! I'll have to learn that patience is a virtue...

I've noticed the closing date thing. I recently applied for a job for which the closing date is about a month after the advert appeared in the newspaper.

So do they wait around a month with the position not being filled, and all the other workers having to pick up the slack? I'm assuming that not everybody who quits their job gives at least a month's notice.  I suppose it's good in that they have enough time to pick the best possible employee, but I'm used to the US system where the first qualified applicant gets the job, so jobs don't stay unfilled very long.

They don't do it just to pick the best applicant, they mostly do it to satisfy their legal obligations for equal opportunities etc. The public sector in particular, will re-advertise if only one candidate applies, so they can show they advertised appropriately and had a benchmark to judge the first candidate against, even if the *only* candidate is perfect for the job - they also do this to ensure that no-one can complain if an internal person is appointed.
