Has anyone been to Sicily?

It's another possibility on our list and I would love to hear of any opinions ;)

My family is from there  and  I have visited  a few times.  It is beautiful.  My brother in law  says  that the landscape is  prettier than Hawaii  if you like  ocean, mountains  and  vineyards  all within  viewing distance.  as far  as I know, it is still not a  big touristy spot  so accommodations  I hear can be  expensive, but  then again..you won't  run into many tourists.. If you want a more touristy place I'd  say Taormina..  weather wise.. Sicily  August can be   a bit too warm. plus the whole island  goes on  'holiday' so the  beaches are beyond packed..(we  prefer  museums  and  city stuff so it didn't phase us  until we tried to take a  walk on the boardwalk :D)  Like I said.. I don't do the whole tourist thing very well ..and I tend to stay more near Palermo, although I have ventured out to other provinces..  not sure where you  were thinking about going.. The people  are friendly, the food is  wonderful, and if you like the laid back attitude..  you will enjoy it..  ;D  (maybe I should have DH post .. he may have  a  more unbiased opinion)  :P

Brilliant- thank you!  Taormina is where I am interested in - Catacombs close by for hubby, that view and the botanical gardens and strolling around somewhere so beautiful for me.  Considering late Sept/early October, but reasonably flexible.

Just trying combination of flights/accomms, the B&B's there seem to be far superior to here for example with decent bathrooms and seaviews, but I am e-mailing to check I have read it correctly for room rate and not per person rate.

I am not generally a med type person, but I watched a programme about Taormina and it looks SO beautiful and I have become a little obsessed about going there now!

For someone who (god forbid!) doesn't like pasta or even much pizza, I understand there is a lot of fresh fish/swordfish for example, but are there other choices too?

This was a great reply- thank you again :)

sea food is great a sis the  fruit!!  and yes  we just went in early June and it seems  seafood is the trend right now.. anytime you go to a restaurant they give  you ALL kinds of fish  if that Sis what you order.. One  thing the Sicilians  DON'T do is  gipp you on portion size  (not like here)   :-[  did I say that out loud?   :P :-[ :-X ;D ;D ;D
have a  blast if you decide to go..  :D
