Driving license
« on: May 08, 2006, 09:07:13 AM »
When my fiance moves to the UK, will he need to trade his US driving licence for a UK one? Will he be allowed to drive with his US one?
If he does need to change it, how do we go about that?

He'll be able to drive legally with his US license for 12 months, but that's it. Have a look around here under 'Travel and Transport.' You should be able to find all the answers to your questions! :)

He will be able to drive on it for a period of 1 year and will then need to exchange it for a british driving livence, he will not be required to pass a test he can just exchange his licence, note that he will almost certainly only be able to drive automatic cars and will probably need to sit a british driving test in order to drive a car with a gear stick

If you are from a EC/EEA country or in the list of Gibraltar and Designated Countries you can just exchange it.  But if you are from outside you have to pass the test.

USA drivers CANNOT exchange their license.  Some countries can, as listed on the DVLA site, but not the USA.  US drivers have one year....then they have to get their UK license.  I would strongly recommend getting started right away.  Get the provisional, take the theory, etc.....it takes alot of time, and one would not want to be without a license if you are used to driving.
