Little boys and 'accidents'...
« on: July 11, 2005, 03:59:41 PM »
My sister called me in tears the other night....her 5yo boy is still having accidents.  (Wetting the bed in addition to daytime accidents.)  He's due to start kindergarten next month.  They're not a constant thing, but seem to come in spurts.  (He'll stay dry for several weeks, then have multiple accidents a day for several weeks.)  As the mother of girls, I'm not in the best of positions to give her advice.  I told her that a) I wasn't sure that this was terribly unusual for boys; b) that I think part of it is that he's so busy doing other things that he finds interesting that he doesn't want to be bothered w/the toilet until it's too late for him to make it; and c) reminded her that they have recently moved house, he's about to start school, AND he's about to get a new baby brother in addition to the one he already has, and that's a lot of change for a 5yo to deal with.  None of this, however, is practical advice, which is what she's really looking for.  (I did advise her to run it past her pediatrician.)  Anyone have advice they'd like to share?

Thanks from my hormonally charged, very pregnant sister!!!  ;)

When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

Nothing to worry about. My first son was toilet trained just before 2. He hasnt had one single accendent since. My second son was trained just before his third birthday and was fine till he turned 5 and then started wetting the bed. I was so frustrated I took him to the doctor. Its just something he went through for about a year. I stopped all drinks 2 hours before bedtime and it helped a lot. I read somewhere you should wake your child up to use the toilet but I never went to anything that extreme. Its just a phase a lot of kids go through.
My three year old wet the bed two nights ago. It was the first time he ever has but Im prepared for the worst!

We're not to the potty training stage yet, but I've heard that some times boy's bladders don't grow as fast as the rest of their bodies.  It always catches up, but there's wetting in the mean time.  This is more for when they are still wetting at 7 or 8. She should got see the pediatrician just to make sure it's not something physical and just life.

Have her contact her doctor to make sure it's not a medical issue.  My sister had the same problem when she was younger.  But I used to work in a day care, and it is definetley not the norm for a potty trained child to go from trained to have accidents for a few weeks.  Maybe he's under some kind of stress?  Yousaid your sis is pregnant?  Having a new sibling to contend with could be making him feel like he needs to get the attention somehow, or maybe regressing to being a baby because he undoubtedly hears about the new baby.
