Proof of Address for Bank Account
« on: July 17, 2005, 06:19:32 PM »
The most accepted and common proof of residence to open a bank account is a utility bill.  However, I will not be able to produce once since the lady who owns the house that I will be staying at has all the bills go in her name.  Would the banks accept other bills such as credit card or mobile phone?  If anyone has experience with this, please post your reply!  Thanks.

I brought in my car registration and my NHS card as proof of address and it worked. This was because BT wouldn't add me to my husband's account saying that they will only allow one name on the account now. I'm sure the bank would accept other bills.

Mobile bills, for some reason, are usually not accepted. Land line bills are. A credit card bill would also work, I should think....

No mobile bills.
No store card statements.
Some banks DO accept credit card statements, and some dont.
Bank statements are acceptable.

Well I was planning on using my US bank statements that will be directed to the UK address as well as major credit card bills, such as visa, MC or Amex, no store ones.  Do you know or have any experience with HSBC?  Does anyone know if they take other proofs besides utility?

i can say that lloyds and barclays gave us a hard time with no utility bills.

can you ask to be put on the council tax bill?  will you be there for a while?  they can add a name to a bill-then take it off!

I signed up with HSBC and still can say nothing against them - they were, and have always been lovely.  I walked in with a stack of papers - bank statements from U.S., passport, as well as letters of reference to show I intended to look for a job, and, a letter from the person with whom I was staying saying she was the owner of the home, and that I would indeed be staying with her until I found my own accommodation (and due to my just arriving, there was nothing available with my name and that address yet).  That was good enough for them!

My HSBC experience was similar to Elizabeth's.  But I had a utility bill in my name and a letter from my uni.  Would the lady who owns your house allow you to put one of the bills in your name for a month or two?  If she would write you a letter to the bank, that would help.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…
