WHAT IS A GOOD SALARY FOR A SINGLE PERSON?
« on: August 07, 2005, 07:57:26 PM »
Hi. I am a lawyer in the US and will be job hunting in London this fall.  No visa problems because I'm an EU citizen (I think it's crazy that greeks and germans have more right to work here than you fine americans, oh well).

I've met (telephonically) with job agencies and recruiters and am told that a realistic range for a lawyer with my experience (3 yrs doing mostly company law) is about 30,000 to 40,000 pounds. and that is taking into consideration that I also recently passed the test to re-qualify as a solicitor.

On current exchange rate terms 35,000 pounds is about 60-65,000 dollars, which is about the same I earn here.  My question is - is this good for London.  I am looking at flats in central London (zone 2) for about 1000/month - can I get a decent one bedroom flat in a safe area for that. Is that too much for rent considering the salary. It's bvery hard to judge these things from over here.

thanks.

Yes, GBP35000/year is a good salary for a person with 3 yrs exp.

I live in zone 2 (NW London) and most places are in the GBP1000/month range and higher.  It all depends which part of zone 2 you are in.  Have you considered sharing a flat with others?

That sounds like the right amount of money for a solicitor who has only recently qualified in the UK.

I'm getting deja vu.

I thought this enquiry had been put out there before.  I'm glad Saf found the other threads so I didn't have to go looking!

Tenthplanet.. are you hoping the information will change over time?  Because you've been given good advice before, I'm not sure why you're still asking.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Walking away from this one....  :P
When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

well, they say money makes the world go round....but perhaps they meant his world revolves around money....*shrugs*
But never fear, gentlemen; castration was really not the point of feminism, and we women are too busy eviscerating one another to take you on.
