Toothache remedies for pregnant women....
« on: July 28, 2005, 05:06:41 PM »
....no, not me - thank heavens!!!  My poor sister is 32 weeks pregnant and has a KILLER toothache.  Long story, but her dentist can't see her until Monday.  Meanwhile, she's barely functioning because she's in so much pain.  (Did I add she has a 5yo and 1yo at home?)  I managed to get in touch w/the on-call Dr. at her OB's office about 11pm last night and he ok'd me giving her a couple of tylenol w/codeine.  Any suggestions to help her get through the next few days?  I'm leaving work early today to help her out w/her kids...

Poor thing.... :(
When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

Oh man, what a nightmare!!! I think toothaches and earaches are the world's worst!!!

Would warm compresses help? Like a flannel soaked in hot water and pressed against her cheek? Or even a heating pad (do they have heating pads over here? Do they even make heating pads anymore or was that some old-fashioned thing that my mom used to have?)

Or my Mom's teething remedy... rubbing whisky on my gums!!!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Might make her forget about her toothache!  ;)

Any warmth or heat at all sends her through the roof.  Has anyone tried the temporary filling stuff you can buy at the store?  Her problem started several months ago (before she knew she was pregnant, I think) when her dentist was giving her a root canal.  He broke a drill bit off in her tooth and was unable to get it out again.  Referred her to another dentist that was NOT covered by her insurance and didn't offer to pay himself.  So she's been walking around w/a drill bit in her tooth and a temp filling on top of it.  She says the temp filling is pretty much gone at this point.  There's a concern that she might have an infection, so I'm a bit afraid of her trying to pack her tooth with anything in case it makes things worse.  (She is, however, on antibiotics...)

I had toothache last year and found cold soothing as opposed to heat. The best thing I found was putting a frozen oven chip as close as possible to the source of the pain, as it seemed to numb it.

What about Ambasal?  It's topical and might help reduce the pain.  Or if she can't find that, kids teething gel.  Again topical, but combined with the tylonol might make it bearable.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.  A quick update...

Got home from work to find out that her OB had given her a prescription for Lortab.  Needless to say, she was zonked out on the couch when I saw her!  I let her sleep for about 3 hours, then decided I'd better get her up.  She decided to go and sit in the dentist's waiting room until he had time to see her.  (Go Fiona!!!)  She came back in more pain than she left in.  The dentist opened it all back up again, cleaned it out (but didn't try to get the drill out), sealed it up, and filed her tooth way down so she wouldn't hit it on her other teeth when eating/talking/etc.  Another Lortab, another long nap, but I managed to get some food in her once she woke up and by the time she left my house (about 11pm!!) she was feeling much better.  She said the dentist thinks she might have a root fracture.  Anyway, he's not going to do anything else until after she has the baby, as he doesn't want to keep her in the chair too long while she's pregnant.  So...only two more months to get through... :P
