Went Shopping
« on: August 02, 2005, 06:33:45 PM »
Thanks to all that replied to my "Mothercare Alternative" post.  My little one and I finally arrived in the UK Saturday and I'm still suffering from bad jet lag, anyways, I went to IKEA and got some great deals and bought a beautiful toddler bed along with lots of other stuff but when we got home we realized we grabbed the WRONG mattress and slat from the pick up area!?!  We don't know where we went wrong, we wrote down the item and location correctly but somehow we grabbed the wrong one. Ugh!!  So we will be heading back to IKEA this week (DH had to go out of town for work).
I live by this new huge Tescos center in Slough that just opened the 1st of August and we found a GREAT highchair there, it is surprisingly VERY NICE, I had to have it, it cost a whopping £49, I would've never spent that much in the U.S for a highchair but my husband says I have to get use to UK prices and just come to accept the cost of living here.
The only thing we went to Mothercare for were some security gates because we wanted the ones that are pressure held not nailed into the wall, which is all IKEA had.
We have the big stuff out of the way but if anyone has anymore childrens store suggestions, I'm always interested!

Some of the really big Boots stores have great baby and toddler sections with smashing clothes, toys and all the little bits and pieces. I don't think they do the big stuff, but you say you have that anyway.

I also think I'm right in saying that Toys'R'Us stores in the UK now have the Babies'R'Us sections, but I could be dreaming this!

Next do the most wonderful, cute baby and toddler clothes but they're quite pricey. I've also found that Woolworths do some nice, much cheaper stuff.

Hope you get what you need!

Thanks Wintersong, I think you're right about Boots, there is one near me but I haven't been in since I've returned, but I do remember them having a good baby selection.  Woolworths is good also, but I totally forgot about it.  I will check it out for the items left on my list.  :)

There's a TK Maxx in Slough I think, check that out for baby clothes, also BHS has a good range of well priced baby clothes.  M&S is a bit dearer but at least their clothes are on the bigger side so they last longer. (I find Ethan grows out of his Mothercare outfits very quickly).  Not sure how big the Boots in in Slough, larger ones sell the whole gamut including prams, higchairs etc but you say you've got most of the big stuff anyway. They also have a lot of toys and nice clothing ranges - some Boots sell OshKosh as well as their own Mini Mode label.

Thanks Britwife, yes there is a TJ Maxx here but I don't like it as it is always really disorganized, things are all over the place and messy, I can never find what I want.  I've seen a BHS but never knew what it was, there are so many shops on High st that I just always passed it, I will check it out.  The Boots in Slough is a decent size but is not a superstore by any means.  I really love Boots in the UK, they have really good "Boots" brand items.   :)

Hiya! if I can make a suggestion: Woolworth's is fab for onesies....the ones in Mothercare are more expensive and ours always got a hole in them around the snaps after one washing!

Also, try to get info for your area on second hand shops for children.  It's a great place for toys, and some great deals on clothes...they grow out of them soooo fast.

Mothercare sells gates for £30 but Argos does them for £19.99.

Thanks so much!  Someone mentioned Argos before and we have yet to go there either.  I like to hunt for bargains and my husband would rather spend double going somewhere he's already been!?!

Check out www.argos.co.uk before you go to shop---if you find what you like you can have it reserved for pick up at the store, makes it quick and easy.

I forgot about Argos! You can usually find pretty much anything cheaper in Argos than it is in regular stores. They also have a clothing catalogue now as well.

Hope your shop goes well - enjoy it! I love buying baby stuff  :)
