Has anyone tried this for phone calls?
« on: August 29, 2005, 11:37:36 PM »
Yahoo messenger says that you can make free international PC to PC phone calls. I'm suspicious of the "free." I just wondered if any of you have used this and had any likes or dislikes.

I posted something about this not too long ago, but I tried to download it and it screwed up my puter. I'm sure its free,  its just like speaking on microphone on pm's , your calling their puter not their home phone, not sure why yahoo considers it pc to pc phone calls :P

I've used the yahoo voice call, what it is really is glorified voice chat. As stated here, you have to use microphones and can only call from computer to computer. The quality was ok for the most part, and your messanger will answer computer calls just like voice mail when you are not available. It is completely free, but I wasn't all that impressed. If you talk accidentilly at the same time as your partner, you don't hear anything at all. After being on a "call" for any length of time, the sound quality deteriorated, and we ended up sounding like Mickey Mouse. Though it was ok to mess around with a little, I don't think it's the most reliable. I also recently noticed I will have "voicemail" on there for weeks that I was never notified of.

just like coffeebean said, check out skype. it's a great PC to Mac option. also you can buy time to call regular phone numbers through your computer.

I was surprised at how clear it sounded.

I use Skype to call people on their mobiles in the US and the quality is similar to when we use our land line to the same numbers. At odd times you get some lag, but it's never very bad and the cost is pretty low.  You have to buy credit and then use it within 180 days or something like that.

I have Skype also. It's fantastic. Yes it's free to call PC to PC. But I paid 30 Euros for the option to get a U.S. phone number so all my family and friends can call me for free! Of course it only works if you're logged on to your computer when they call. But the quality is great with only a slight delay.
