Discount stores
« on: August 14, 2005, 01:08:22 PM »
Yesterday I had a very strong urge to go to Target. Very strange because I have survived in the UK for the past 5 years and never really missed discount stores. We used to have a "Big W" here in Coventry but its a Tesco now. Yes another Tesco which we dont need. We not have three Tesco's in Coventry and not a single discount store. Im not talking about Woolies but a real store like Target where you can buy your cookies, toothpaste, clothes and motor oil all in one place. My husband said we have Asda and Tesco but its just not the same thing. Anyone here in the UK have any decent discount stores nearby?

How weird -- my first words to DH this morning were, "I wanna go to Target".  Seriously!  ;D

Pebs, i know you were only using this as an example, but... i have an Asda and a super-duper Tesco both within 20 minutes drive, and i can get all those things (cookies, toothpaste, clothes, motor oil) all in the one shop.    They're brilliant!  The Tesco even has a really nice cafe with yummy food.... and they dont have that horrible fake popcorn smell that Target has!  ;)

I definitely miss the all-in-one stores.  I'm not one for going from shop to shop.

I miss Target, too. I just love the choice of designs and quality at much better prices. For example, Mom bought me 2 lovely summery vinyl tablecloths for less than $4 each. They look great, they are cheap, they are easy to find over there. I'm already planning on asking her to look for autumn/winter ones!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Oh. My. God. I spent so much time in Target when I was last home it is not even funny. I loved it, great stuff for dirt cheap. I got loads of stuff for my bathroom. I think we even had a thread about it awhile back. Have you cruised the Target website? Almost as good as being there.

www.target.com for your Target fix.

Pebbles:
You, me, Target, January, Iowa!  :)

Target is a seven-minute drive from my house.  I'll be happy to escort you when you are here if you are still needing a Target fix.

Any other stores you are interested in?  We don't have quite the same level of shopping as you might be used to in Chicago, but we have a reasonable selection.

I feel for you guys missing Target. It is SO great being back here visiting the US because of all the bargains! You just can't find them in the UK to the same extent... you feel like you're living so luxuriously when you can buy so much here for so cheap!  ;D Yesterday I went to Marshalls and I was just in shock at how much gorgeous stuff I could actually afford without paying SO much more for the same things in the UK (even at their equivalent, TK Maxx). The variety was amazing too-- it literally had everything you could possibly need. My DF and I also adore Target, and we'll head there sometime this week. I still love the UK, but everything in the US just feels so luxurious after being in the UK for so long, and you're getting it all for such affordable prices! You really can live the life of luxury here on a budget, it's amazing.
Plans on hold 'cuz Brexit
