Why do you need to get to Heathrow?

Oh, I thought you had a connecting flight or something.
Gatwick's not that much further than Heathrow.  It wouldn't make sense to trek all the way out there and then home.  Just go direct.   :)

Personally DH and I like Gatwick much better than Heathrow. It seems so much easier to navigate.

There is a national express coach that goes directfrom Gatwick to Heathrow if you need to.  Where are you flying from? I caught a Continental flight (although it was actually a Virgin plane if you see what I mean)  from Heathrow to LA once so maybe you an get a flight into Heathrow after all?

Continental will book you on Virgin, when flying to and from Orlando as well, because they dont' have direct flights to Orlando. I think it just depends on which city you are trying to connect to.

Ditto, Canys

Gatwick is the best.

I have used the bus shuttle between Gatwick and Heathrow. It is very easy and comfortable but a long drive after a transatlantic flight.

There's another thing you can do but it would be very stupid. If you decide not to go to Heathrow for whatever reason and are just headed into London, the Thameslink leaves Gatwick and takes you on a charming tour of Croydon and the industrial areas in the south of London and calls at several major stations in London. Then, from there, the Underground Piccadilly Line actually goes out to Heathrow although if I'm not mistaken it's being worked on right now and for whatever reason, you can't get off at Terminal 4 right now, which is okay because Continental is one of the first three. But the travel time on the Piccadilly line from London out through Hounslow to Heathrow is pretty long and when you're trying to pick up your sister from immigration who just arrived from Miami and you're running late it might be the longest tube ride of your life. I imagine that the train time would be similar to taking a bus from one to the other, but I get the feeling that the bus would be less expensive. Plus you don't have to ride with all of the scary people in London like the drunken main who was shouting Nazi slogans and goosestepping about the carriage muttering the occasional Heil Hitler! And for what it's worth, I also prefer Gatwick mainly because it seems so less cluttered and congested. If you've got any social anxiety disorder then Heathrow would be the death of you :P
